RECAP: SongwritingWith:Soldiers Reception

On September 22, 2013, John and Lanette Kinnaird opened their lovely Westlake Hills home and hosted an elegant cocktail reception for SongwritingWith:Soldiers, a nonprofit organization founded by Austin songwriter and recording artist Darden Smith.

SongwritingWith:Soldiers creates opportunities for service members returning from combat to share their stories with professional songwriters. Working collaboratively, they transform these extraordinary stories into songs.

The event’s seventy-five guests were lucky enough to hear some of these songs performed live by Darden Smith and Nashville-based musicians Radney Foster and Jay Clementi.

As the sun set, casting long graceful shadows across the Kinnairds’ beautiful terrace and grounds, guests mingled in a magical atmosphere of gratitude, open hearts, and lifted spirits.

SongwritingWith:Soldiers hopes to hold more weekend retreats and day-long workshops for veterans as well as produce CDs and concerts of the soldiers’ songs.

“These beautiful songs heal, educate, and bring us together. They need to be written and they need to be heard. With more funding, we will be able to do this,” said Mary Judd, Executive Director.
