The inaugural Mack, Jack & McConaughey (MJ&M) event made its debut with a weekend full of activities geared toward raising money for a variety of kids charities. Mack Brown, Jack Ingram and Matthew McConaughey hosted the entire weekend and drew a star-studded crowd of participants throughout the three-day fundraiser. In addition to the opening night gala, there were multiple golf outings, a Lela Rose fashion presentation at Neiman Marcus, and two nights of concerts featuring John Mellencamp and Jack Ingram, among others.
Thursday night’s kick off featured a gala dinner at ACL Live, including a silent auction and a live auction that by our own account hauled in nearly a quarter of a million dollars! Of course it doesn’t hurt when your live auction items include an Aston Martin, tickets to a red carpet premiere of MUD, the next project by McConaughey. Oh, and did we mention a Golden Retriever puppy? Yes, you read that correctly. An $18,000 puppy when all was said and done.
As the auctioneers whipped the crowd into a frenzy, the hosts lent their voices of encouragement to the bidders at the dinner. One guest was even overheard asking “how much for Magic Mike to take off his pants,” alluding to Mr. McConaughey’s recent turn in Steven Soderberg‘s ode to male dancers.
But back to the real winners: the charities. The gala weekend benefited The Rise School of Austin, the just keep livin Foundation, HeartGift, CureDuchenne, and Grounded in Music. It was noted by the emcee that the impact of MJ&M will reach throughout Texas, California, Louisiana, and more than 23 countries around the world. The goal is that each year MJ&M will support select organizations that share the organization’s mission to empower kids.
Well past the scheduled time, Dale Watson took the stage and worked his way through a number of Texas-tinged classics before Mellencamp gave the gala crowd and patrons who had purchased tickets only for the concert a real treat. The veteran roker started off with “The Authority Song” and worked his way through a number of hits … marking the perfect ending to the first night of MJ&M. We can’t wait for next year so see how this event evolves.
