Southwest of the SXSW madness on small ranch, music and authentic Texas style collided, proving to be the perfect mid-week respite. The Heartbreakers Banquet returned this SXSW with a SIMS Foundation benefit on Willie Nelson’s ranch, headlined by Jim James. The 30 minute drive through the rolling hills alone was a therapeutic retreat.
The Luck, Texas ranch – in all its old western glory – set the tone from the moment of arrival. Harmonious melodies from Spirit Family Reunion radiated from the small church with each pew packed and onlookers peering through the arched windows. The church served as the small stage and alternated acts with the large stage located on the other end of ‘town.’
Families and friends sat beneath a giant oak tree on blankets, drinking Tito’s concoctions and Lagunitas IPA. Others ventured in and out of the small town at a leisurely pace finding a saloon in the Opry House, New York based hat shop and even a tattoo parlor in the jail.
If you were so inclined to get ink done, why not on Willie’s ranch in a wooden jail cell?
At dusk, the husband and wife duo Shovels & Rope took the main stage and blew the crowd away. Expect to hear their name more in the coming year.
Every act let the crowd know how excited they were playing at the Luck Ranch. After Jim James left the stage, he tweeted “Wow everybody! The spirits were with us tonight at the Heartbreaker Banquet… That was awesome. It comes with the winds. The spirits were willing.”
