RECAP: Beauty of Life 2015

Benefiting Hospice Austin

A lot can happen on an early weekday morning. While many people were still arriving at the office or to morning appointments this past Friday, close to one thousand people descended on the Hilton Austin for the annual Beauty of Life brunch, benefiting Hospice Austin.

Chic boutiques from across the city assembled pop-up shops showcasing their wares, with a portion of sales going toward the organization and its mission of providing compassionate care, education and bereavement support. A silent auction provided even more opportunities to support the cause and was jam-packed right up until the the dimming lights signaled the beginning of the seated meal.

After a lovely light lunch brunch of egg souffle, salad and fruit it was time to get down to business. A live text auction added an element of excitement to the fundraising experience as attendees watched the totals group right before their eyes! The came the keynote speaker, author Cheryl Strayed, who penned the book Wild, which was recently developed into a feature film starring Reese Witherspoon.

Strayed’s personal tale of her mother’s own sudden illness and the then-new idea of hospice care was touching, humorous and on a day when we later were reminded how terrible our world can be at times, full of humanity. We’re very fortunate in Austin to draw noted speakers to our events, but Hospice Austin won the jackpot with the selection of Strayed for this particular event. We can’t wait to see what they do next year.
