RECAP: 2016 11th Annual Beauty of Life Luncheon

Benefiting Hospice Austin

The 11th Annual Beauty of Life Luncheon was held the morning of October 21st at the JW Marriott. This event always brings a life affirming, positive and inspirational element to what is a very serious topic — end of life care.

The elegant and beautifully presented luncheon benefits Hospice Austin, a non-profit organization that provides end of life care to any person, regardless of complexity of illness, cost of care or the patient’s ability to pay.

Beauty of Life was emceed by Shannon Wolfson of KXAN, with presenting sponsors Lexus of Austin and Texas Oncology. This year’s keynote speakers were Lori and Wayne Earl, mother and father of Esther Earl, the bright and talented teenager who inspired the bestseller “The Fault in Our Stars.”

Esther’s parents shared excerpts from the compilation memoir, “This Star Won’t Go Out,” published to honor their late daughter who courageously fought, but ultimately lost a battle with thyroid cancer.

One notable quote from the book by Esther – “just be happy, and if you can’t be happy, do things that make you happy. Or do nothing with the people that make you happy” – captured the spirit of this event. It reminds us to appreciate life and find happiness sharing time with loved ones.

For this philanthropic Austin crowd, no doubt part of being happy comes in supporting organizations like Hospice Austin that have done so much for patients and families in need. The Beauty of Life luncheon was a wonderful reminder to live as fearlessly and adventurously as the brave teen Esther Earl.
