We’ve reached that time of year again when the fall social season begins to wind down. It’s also the time of year when the chase for a certain mirror ball trophy becomes one of the most sought-after endeavors in the city. As usual, the 2013 edition of Dancing With The Stars Austin, presented by Lexus of Austin didn’t disappoint.
The pairings of professional dancers with local boldface names all brought their A-game to the Hilton on Sunday to support the Center for Child Protection…and compete to take home some hardware! In only its seventh year, the event surpassed the $1 million mark in one night, no doubt thanks to the generosity of notable Austinites who participated in the competition or attended the event.
Co-Chairs Carol Adams and Alex Winkelman brought together a group of dancers that included social do-gooder Mary Tally, real estate and downtown living advocate Kevin Burns, and power lawyer Becky Beaver. The judges, which typically provide the majority of comic relief in between the performances, included Dan Bullock, Barbara Chisholm, and Ed Clements.
When all was said and done, Will Hardeman emerged victorious with his partner Klair Van Slyke following their James Bond-themed performance. Katie Jaffe was named 1st runner-up with dance partner Matt Stewart, and Jamie Barshop was named 2nd runner up with Rowdy Dufrene.
While Sunday provided countless entertainment, it’s important to note that the Center for Child Protection is the first stop for children in Travis County who are suspected victims of various types of abuse, or those who have witnessed a violent crime. It’s also the only nonprofit in Travis County involved in the investigation of crimes against children. We’ve said it before, but kudos to this group for taking on such a tough and unglamorous mission.
So now, as we close out the “official” Fall Social Season once again, let’s reminisce for a moment. This fall has been one that exhibited many acts of kindness and philantrhopy among Austin’s movers and shakers, much like was on display at Dancing With The Stars. As we head into the holiday season, we can hardly wait to see what Spring 2014 will bring!
