This Thursday, the eighth annual Maudie’s Moonlight Margarita Run & Gala returns alongside Lady Bird Lake for an evening run and party benefiting The Trail Foundation.
The Moonlight Margarita Run was one my first events to attend in Austin. In 2006, a group of my friends all suited up in workout attire for a night on the town. The whole event had appeal to us for many reasons:
1) You don’t have to be an athlete to compete in the 5K. We were there for the atmosphere and a mild workout. The 3.1 miles is a short distance and the race is – just like a run on the Trail – filled with all ages and paces. Biggest benefit is that run is at night, so less heat!
2) There is a party at the end. Nothing motivates you to finish a run like Maudie’s fajitas and cold margaritas. The lights and music on the American Legion Hall lawn draw you in from your run to the fun. On top of that, you just ran so no guilt when you go for seconds.
3) It’s a great cause. Executive Director of The Trail Foundation, Susan Rankin says it best. “There are plenty of chances to run on the Trail, but the Moonlight Margarita Run is a special chance to run for it.”
You can buy tickets to just the party or 5K, but we suggest to go all in for both.
I still have my takeaway glow in the dark cup to commemorate my 2006 run. Though I cannot promise there will be glowing cups, I do promise a cool, margarita-filled night.
