EVENT RECAP: Austin Seen
Here at Austin Social Planner, we are big fans of the annual EAST Austin Studio tour, which is a weekend-long collaboration of east Austin galleries and temporary art spaces. This past weekend, the folks at Big Medium decided to give the spaces and places west of I-35 a little love with the new WEST Austin Studio Tour.
Galleries opened their doors and formerly empty stores-fronts turned into art pop-up-shops. We dropped into a preview Friday night of one such shop on 117 Lavaca for Austin Seen. Mixed-media artists Shanny Lott and Peggy Weiss joined photographers John Langmore and Bob Wynn in creating a beautiful gallery in the middle of the Second Street District.
Each piece in the show had scenes and spaces from Austin’s landscape in an effort ton “portray the real feel of Austin.” The work of John Langmore was unknown to me prior to the event, but his collection of photographs taken at Eeyore’s Birthday was both lighthearted and striking.
We chatted briefly with artist Bob Wynn about his collection of the Friday night lights of Austin High School football games. Net proceeds from all his printed pieces are donated in memory of an Austin high school student, Audrey Ductoe, who died in a car accident in 2008. Both of her parents were in attendance for the evening.
