Event Recap: Arthouse 5×7 Art SPLURGE

Believe it or not, 2011 marked Arthouse‘s 12th annual 5×7 Art SPLURGE fundraiser. To make the evening a little more special, this year also marked the return of the event to its newly-renovated home. The second floor of the gallery was made for events like this, where the structure of the building is a blank canvas for the art to shine.

For novices to 5×7, the event is all about the art and the art of knowing when you find a piece of art you can’t live without. From the moment guests arrive, their eyes are transfixed to the white walls adorned with hundreds of pieces of 5” x 7” art. The petite works are the centerpiece and the conversation point for all as they move through the space with drink in hand and art on the mind.

A little over an hour into the event, the emcee (this year it was man about town Andy Langer) alerts the crowd that it’s almost time. Those who haven’t already, position themselves strategically and stand anxiously in-front of the 5×7 that calls to them. Each piece of art has a tag in front of it, and at the airing of a bullhorn, guests grab the tag to officially call the art their own. For those few seconds, tensions are high and everyone is looking around for a possible scuffle, but the “pick” seemed to go off without a hitch this year.
