Interview with Dell Children’s Gala 2012 Chair Kay Moreland

Eric and Kay Moreland, 2012 Gala Chairs

The New Year is upon us and with that comes another season of Austin galas and soirees. None is more anticipated than the one that kicks-off them all, Dell Children’s Gala 2012 Art of Healing.

We chatted with Gala Chair Kay Moreland to get the scoop on the annual event and the cause it supports.

Dell Children’s is an amazing organization. What motivated Eric and you to get involved and chair the 2012 event?

Eric and I got involved with the hospital many years ago after hearing Dell Children’s Sr. Teresa George speak to our Sunday school class.  As parents ourselves, we were moved and impressed by the medical expertise, facilities and care available to our area’s children right here in our own community.  At that time we made Dell Children’s Medical Center one of our primary philanthropic priorities.  We’ve been involved with the organization ever since.

When asked to chair the event this year, we knew this was our time to make a significant contribution to this great facility.

How many years has the annual event occurred?

This year marks the 26th anniversary for this annual event.

For those that have not been to the event, let us know a little bit more of what to expect that evening?

The gala itself is an extremely entertaining, yet meaningful, event.  The evening starts with a cocktail reception followed by an elegant dinner and live auction.  We then kick up our heels to live music by Sauce and enjoy fun gaming in the casino lounge. There’s also an after party at the Four Seasons.

For those that have attended, what is something new and exciting added to the itinerary of the night?

My personal favorite is hearing the patient family stories that our shared the night of the event.  Every year, different families share their journey with Dell Children’s.  These stories always remind Eric and me of why we support this hospital.

We also work hard to vary the décor, auction items, and theme of the event so there are always new surprises for our repeat attendees. The 2012 Gala theme is “The Art of Healing.” Eric and I feel that healing for anyone, especially children, is much more than a surgery, procedure, or prescription.

Dell Children’s has made healing an art form – through child life services, art therapy, pet therapy and more. The Dell Children’s Medical Center’s facility also lends to the healing process. The family-centered environment includes meditation gardens, areas for children to play and study, as well as a 950+-piece art collection – the largest non-museum art collection in Central Texas.

What is the impact of this one evening for Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas?

This event raises $1,000,000 annually and 100% of these proceeds are donated directly back to the hospital.
