Dancing With The Stars, Austin Style!

Whether you know your Foxtrot from your Viennese Waltz or not, the hottest place to be in Austin on the first Sunday in December is at the downtown Hilton. Why, you ask? Because that’s where some of the city’s best and brightest will put on their shiniest, sparkly duds to compete for the Glitter Ball at Austin’s very own Dancing with the Stars, benefiting the Center for Child Protection. What began just a few years ago as a way to raise funds and awareness for area children in crisis has grown into one of the most highly-anticipated events in town, with sellout crowds clamoring for a glimpse of the boldface names gliding across the ballroom.

They say it takes two to tango, and social swans¬†Maria Groten and Mary Herr Tally are the visionary dynamic duo at the helm of DWTS Austin, for their second and third turns around the dance floor respectively. Their steadfast fundraising leadership is visible at many other stellar events around town (including ZACH’s Red, Hot & Soul) and their commitment to the various causes they support is palpable. Among the stable of notables they have wrangled for this year’s competition are Mayor Pro Tem Mike Martinez, fundraiser extraordinaire Amy Rudy, radiologist and community volunteer Dr. John Hogg, Wendy Topfer of the Topfer Family Foundation, and entrepreneur Joe Ross.

The Center for Child Protection is one of Austin’s most effective non-profits…with one of the most heartbreaking missions. Tasked with shining a light into the lives of some of Austin’s most vulnerable citizens, the Center is often the first stop for children who are suspected victims of sexual and physical abuse, in addition to being a safe haven for children who have witnessed a violent crime. What these professionals deal with on a daily basis is a truly admirable undertaking. To that, Austin Social Planner tips its hat and says Cha Cha Cha!
